On the 10th of October Musanze experienced its worst fire on record. At 4pm a fire started in the Goico Plaza Market. This market is 5 floors high and takes up a large block in the middle of town. We believe the fire started on the 5 floor and quickly spread, engulfing the entire market and other retail shops below the market.
Thankfully, and quite incredibly, there was no loss of life. However, it is believed there were 5 casualties, and a large portion of the community are nowsuffering from trauma. The market housed 2,200 retailers, thousands of employees and probably has affected 10,000 people down the chain.
DfG has lost their market space which contained some of our sewing machines, finished components, fabric and resources. However, we are so thankful that none of our team was present at the time of the fire.
